Opportunity, Stability, Guidance, and Growth: The Ally Difference
We exist to keep talented journalists working in journalism. Your support makes it possible.

The Sierra Nevada Ally is a nonprofit organization that relies on community support to operate. It’s why we’re asking you to give now during our year-end fundraising campaign, where your donations (up to $1,000) are matched by our partners at NewsMatch.
A note from Executive Editor Noah Glick:
Maybe it’s all the holiday movies I’ve been watching lately, but it feels like all of us at the Sierra Nevada Ally have found a home here, after being stuck on the island of misfit toys. For me, I left a leadership role at another local media outlet that left me feeling burned out and questioning whether I wanted to stay in the industry at all–or if I even could.
The Ally gave me an incredible opportunity to do the kind of work that our community deserves and that frankly, wasn’t happening.
Starting as an intern in 2020, Scott King later found himself in-between jobs and needed a way to pay rent. We gave him a chance to move up from an occasional contributor to our ongoing energy and environmental correspondent. He more than proved his value, and last year became our Managing Director.
The Ally gave him the stability he needed during an uncertain period.
Last year, Hannah Truby was graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno with a master’s degree in journalism, eyes toward the future, and a commitment to local reporting and human impact – and needed a place to build her portfolio. She started with a freelance project, produced several stories, series and photo essays, and then this year was promoted to our Managing Editor, where she helps oversee editorial direction and partnerships.
The Ally gave her the confidence to pursue big ideas, and the guidance to make it happen.
During a round of local media layoffs, Alex Couraud found herself on the chopping block and unsure of where to go next. She wanted a place where she could pursue meaningful work, continue to develop her audio storytelling, and develop new skills – all while keeping her bills paid. We were proud to have her join as a civics reporter, and this year take on the role of Multimedia Director.
The Ally gave her a safety net and a chance for growth, without leaving the industry.
Our work supports not only civic understanding and community engagement, but also the people behind the story. Your financial contributions make it all possible.
