About the Ally

Our Mission. To build healthy communities informed by facts, with a focus on environmental, civics, and cultural reporting from underserved communities.

Our Vision. To create the media alliance model of the future that rebuilds trust and understanding among people, communities and the news media, and democratizes factual information for all residents of the Sierra Nevada and beyond.

What We Believe

Weโ€™re partners, not competitors. We know we canโ€™t cover everything. So, we instead look to partnerships to fill in the gaps of our coverage, so we can focus on the things we do well: environmental, civics and cultural stories from the Sierra Nevada and beyond. Because after all, we can go much further together than any of us can go alone.

People come first, always. As our name implies, we are your Ally. Weโ€™re a conduit for the public and work to find factual information on your behalf. We are inclusive and want to hear from all the people that make up this region. Our reporting will always focus on how issues affect the people, not the institutions, of the Sierra Nevada.

Information should be free to all. Everyone should have the same access to high-quality, factual information about the news and issues going on in their community – regardless of background or economic status. The Ally is community-funded, independent, and will never have a paywall to access content.

Editorial Vision

โ€œInformation of the people, by the people, and for the people.โ€ย  The Ally is a nonprofit, independent journalism cooperative that provides high-quality news, trusted educational content, and thoughtful reflections of life in the Sierra Nevada and beyond. We create and curate content online (sierranevadaally.org) and on the radio (KNVC Carson City, 95.1 FM) that is free for all – because we believe that information should be equitable, not behind paywalls.

Led by award-winning journalist and editor, Noah Glick, the Allyโ€™s team of reporters and audio producers are agents for the public good, getting answers to questions the public wants and needs to know.ย

โ€œOur primary focus at The Ally is to provide desperately needed context within the news, to elevate civic understanding and engagement, and to highlight stories from people and communities we donโ€™t often hear from,โ€ said Glick, The Allyโ€™s executive editor. โ€œUltimately, we hope to build on our award-winning coverage of the environment, civics, and culture, to build bridges of empathy and trust among residents and the media.โ€

The Ally is a fully independent organization that is community-funded. While we do accept contributions from businesses and professional organizations, we maintain full editorial independence.
