From the Managing Editor: Why I Joined the Ally
From empowering new journalists to giving voice to the underrepresented, the Ally offers a lot to the community.

The Sierra Nevada Ally is a nonprofit organization that relies on community support to operate. It’s why we’re asking you to give now during our year-end fundraising campaign, where your donations (up to $1,000) are matched by our partners at NewsMatch.
A note from Managing Editor Hannah Truby:
In an earlier post, I talked about how the Ally gave me my first shot at being a published writer, and encouraged me to try something new–photography.
Today, I’m both a freelance writer and photographer. I’m deeply grateful that the Ally not only gave me confidence in my budding abilities, but also the opportunity to try something new in the first place.
The Ally is a place where young journalists can learn by doing. We welcome student work, mentor new writers, and give people like me a first real shot at publication. It’s a training ground, a community, and a launchpad.
This is why I joined the Ally:
It was this encouragement and spirit of exploration that, I think, make the Ally uniquely special. Just a year ago, I was a student reporter, and the Ally gave me my first real shot at being published, helping me shape my voice as a journalist. I also joined because I could see that the Ally values stories about community, culture, and place—stories that aren’t strictly “newsworthy,” but are worthy all the same.
In 2026, we plan to expand that work even further—continuing our partnerships with students at the Reynolds School and the Hitchcock Project for Visualizing Science, while also creating new bridges between the Ally, local colleges, and the wider community.
It’s this kind of work—strengthening local journalism by supporting emerging reporters—that can’t happen without community support. Your contribution ensures that the Ally can continue training the next generation of journalists, covering the stories that matter, and enriching our region. Support local journalism today and help make these stories possible. And now through Dec. 31, your donation is doubled thanks to our partners at NewsMatch.
