Several weeks ago, Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley, in an open letter to the local library, insinuated that his officers would not respond to emergencies at the library if it officially supported the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement as proposed by the Douglas County Librarian.
Sheriff Coverley has since rolled back his remarks, but his initial letter prompted a small group of BLM activists to gather in protest near the Sheriff’s Office in Minden, Nevada last Saturday.
In response, hundreds of counter protesters, many of them armed, confronted the protesters with taunts, thrown objects and racist epithets. BLM activists marched from the Sheriff’s Office out into town. Counter protesters, many of them armed, followed the group and continued to variously harass them.
When a White counter protester, wearing a rifle, punched a Black man in the head, another man wearing a rifle and various tactical gear stepped in to protect the BLM marcher and calm the assailant and screaming crowd.
In the absence of police, Daniel Tingle, an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran who lost a leg in the conflict, kept the peace.
