Nevada payday lenders’ campaign contributions and the death of AB118

by Brian Bahouth

Carson City – Assembly Bill 118 would prevent short term lenders from charging more than 36 percent annual interest on loans. The bill was assigned to Assembly Commerce and Labor where it has yet to get a hearing. Friday marked the deadline for legislation to clear the committee of first assignment, and AB118 is officially dead, so we took a look at how much money the short term lending industry has spent on campaign contributions for both Assembly and Senate races in Nevada for all seated lawmakers. The data is based on Nevada Secretary of State records and accounts for contributions made between November 9, 2016 and today, and during that period, payday and title lending companies dished out $200,700 in campaign contributions.

Below are companies we queried with the Secretary of State’s office. Our goal was to account for the primary short term lending companies doing business in Nevada and discover if they had made contributions to political campaigns or entities.

The following companies made contributions:

Security Finance Corporation of Spartanburg, SC $17,000.00

Money Tree $4,000.00

Dollar Loan Center $81,200.00

Check into Cash $44,000.00

Title Max $42,500.00

USA Cash Services $12,000.00

The following companies did not make campaign contributions during the query period of November 9, 2016 to today.

Sun Loan Company, Minute Loan Center, Lend-a-check, Family Finance, Nevada Title and Payday Loans, Inc., Cashco or Money in Minutes NV, iCashLoans.com, TopPaydayLoansUSA.com, US Auto Title & Payday Loan,  CASH 1, LLC, Advance America, On Call Cash, Rapid Cash.
