Carson City – Today, at a press conference with legislators and climate advocacy leaders, Governor Steve Sisolak announced that Nevada has joined the U.S. Climate Alliance. The governor formalized Nevada’s participation in the Alliance in a letter sent today. Joining the Alliance represents the fulfillment of a promise Gov. Sisolak made during his campaign to sign a pledge to uphold the Paris Agreement.

“I said in my State of the State address that I will not spend a single second debating the reality of climate change and its impact on our state,” Gov. Sisolak said. “By joining the U.S. Climate Alliance, we are taking bold steps to ensure a better, healthier future for our children. With these ambitious goals and commitments to reduce our carbon footprint, I am determined to make Nevada part of the solution.”

The U.S. Climate Alliance is a bipartisan coalition of now 23 governors committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The Alliance is led by state governments and is focused on state-to-state cooperation to accelerate the deployment of climate solutions needed to help each achieve their climate goals. With Nevada as its newest member, the Alliance represents more than half the U.S. population and 57 percent of the U.S. economy – $11 trillion. The climate and clean energy policies of these states have created 1.6 million renewable energy and energy efficiency jobs, equivalent to 59 percent of all clean energy jobs in the United States.

By joining the Alliance, Nevada is making three major commitments:
Implement policies that advance the goals of the Paris Agreement, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emission by at least 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025; Track and report progress to the global community in appropriate settings, including when the world convenes to take stock of the Paris Agreement, and; Accelerate new and existing policies to reduce carbon pollution and promote clean energy deployment at the state and federal level.
